Have A Heart
“You see, there are so many lives
that you can help to mend.
Be a gift. Have a heart.
Be the one to save a life:
your life will live again.”
___
This poem was originally written for a young man named Bill Coon, who was born with a damaged heart. Soon after he was born, he underwent a heart transplant surgery, becoming one of the youngest heart transplant recipients ever. About twenty years later, while a college student, after years of medication, the heart that was put into him when he was an infant began to fail. He needed a new heart, and a new kidney. He became very sick and was in the hospital for months. On several occasions, a donated heart would become available, but his body was too worn down or too sick to be able to undergo the surgery, in part because his kidney was also failing. He was near death. Finally, a heart became available that was thought to be compatible with his body, and his vital signs improved such that it was finally possible for him to undergo the surgery. He had that second heart transplant, and the next day he had a kidney transplant too. And today, four years later, he has graduated college, and he goes around the country giving presentations, telling his story, and encouraging people to become donors.
This poem was etched on 20×16 inch picture matting, with room for Bill's photograph. He chose to insert a photograph of himself taken just before he went in for the heart transplant surgery, with tubes and wires running all over his body.
I put this poem onto a photograph with a heart on it, to make it available as a photo poem. It is more affordable than the etched pieces, but the important thing is the message that organ donation makes a difference. Bill can tell you.

A poem with a (hypothetical) message from the organ donor to his or her family.
The Legacy
“I hope that you find comfort
in my memory:
The work I do helps someone live —
my greatest legacy.”
___
There are few living organ donors; as such, this poem is written, in a sense, from the perspective of an organ donor who did not plan to be a donor at the time that this person died. In other words, the donor almost always died in a sudden and accidental way. And quite likely, while the donor may have made arrangements to become a donor upon death, he or she did not have a chance to speak to other family members after being injured and then dying. So, I tried to imagine what the donor might want to say to his or her living family members. I certainly think that the donor would be happy to know to know that someone else is able to live on because of the donor's gift.
This is a shorter version of a longer etched poem. The etched poem can be found here: The Legacy.
The shorter photo poem is more affordable than the etched version, though it does not allow for personalization or inclusion of the subject's photograph.

Choice of black, brown or white frame.*
Only $16.99*
