While there are many jokes about lawyers (as with any other occupation), lawyers generally work very hard, and often cases have so many aspects to consider, each of which has to be weighed against the others. There are tangible things to keep track of and to put values on (what witnesses say or physical evidence or even the language of the statutes and case decisions), and there are often intangible things—things that are not so visible—such as witness demeanor or jury makeup or nuance/ambiguity in the laws and cases that may or may not make them applicable or applicable to a foreseeable degree. The vast majority of attorneys, I think, really try hard to do their best, and I believe that the same is true in any occupation or profession.
