“Savor now the subtle scent

that nestles to the earth . . .”

“Winter Deep at White White Dawn”

I love waking up to the sight and the stillness of newly-fallen snow.  And there's a scent to it that is difficult to describe.  But it's there. Even more, there's a sound associated with it.  And that sound is silence, or the absence of sound. Are they the same thing? Is it nature's way of reminding us, even in heavily populated areas, that there is a  comfort in silence?  Perhaps so.  The world is still—in a peaceful, calm way—at least until the snowblowers and the trucks start their work.  But it's nice to notice the sound of snow as it rests, untouched, on our earth, even if for just a short while.

In “Winter Deep at White White Dawn,” I tried to capture that feeling of the silence of the snow. Earth's noises are muffled, momentarily, and it's nice to enjoy the “soundlessness” of it, and the scent of it too.  And the whiteness is a poignant reminder that nature itself is beautiful, and we are forced to appreciate it. And, somewhere  back in time, I think, we were forced to sleep a little longer, and perchance, to dream.

The original version of this poem was two or three stanzas longer.  Shown here are  several versions and several different presentations of varying lengths.  Originally, the poem was actually etched on glass and layered over a large photograph of the snow-covered lake shown in these shorter versions. It's an interesting look.  But this one is not presently for sale on the website.  If you are interested in purchasing one, contact me.
